Being Silly

We had a snow day at our university, and for a person who grew up with Southern heat, a snow day was BIG. Sure, I could've caught up on all my assignments, but of course I had to avoid all of that and write a cute little ditty to show just how excited I was for the snow! Did I procrastinate on that too? But of course!

K.K. Something - Live

This time, I needed to write something in the style of or inspired by Animal Crossing: New Horizons. As much as I love the game and have spent hours terraforming and perfecting my island, it's not my favorite AC game or top fave soundtrack. But what I do love about the franchise, in general, is the fact that it kept K.K. Slider consistent. He was always in the game, and I always had to collect my weekly tunes to fit my collection. Thus, I chose to write a K.K. Slider song with a live version and an aircheck version. I was inspired by K.K. Stroll because of the simple yet cute pulse of the chords. I took that element as my base for the two songs.

K.K. Something - Aircheck

After making the live version, this version was way easier to make. In AC, the aircheck version is just the live version with other instruments instead of vocals and a guitar. It also sounds muffled to mimic the radio/telephone effect. This means that the instruments aren't always in tune and the mixing doesn't have to be perfect. This is great for me! I wanted my piano chords to sound similar to K.K. Stroll, but I wanted my melody line to have a low and nasally quality instead of the high singing in K.K. Stroll. Why did I pick that? It just seems funny and goofy honestly. It works!

Waltz in the Bamboo Forest

I had a huge, summer-long writer's block, and when I was ready again, this is the first thing I wrote. I remembered a cute chord progression that I enjoyed listening too, so I took that progression and just fiddled around until I got a nice melody. I picked two distinct instruments for melodies and used pizzicato strings to create a delicate little waltz.

Cheesy HS Romance

I'm a little embarrassed to write about this, but this track was part of a game my boyfriend and I made for a game jam. The theme was "sh***y mobile games." We just had to make a terrible game. And a terrible game it was. To summarize: Dating sim with incoherent text, near impossible to win, took only two days to create.

Toy Store

I distinctly remember writing this while pulling an all-nighter with some of my friends for a game jam. No one got anything done on their game. In fact, my only goal was to write music haha! The melody was something I had floating around in my head, but I added the other instruments and sound effects. A friend told me to make it sound like you're a tiny character, and I thought about It Takes Two where the main characters are small. Of course I had to use toy sounds! It just matched!

Picking Sprouts - toy version

This was made for Ludum Dare 52! The theme was "harvest", so my boyfriend and I made a little puzzle game where you can harvest/pluck out little seedlings to flip to an alternate world. I was inspired by ibb & obb as well as Super Paper Mario for the game design. I cannot code, so I just made the art, music, and level designs. We didn't end up finishing the game in time because Unity is hard to learn in 48 hours, but we still had a blast making it! Honestly, for a first time entering in a serious game jam, this was not bad!

Picking Sprouts - synth version

I think the hard part was taking what I got with the toy version and swapping out all the instruments. I don't usually work with synths too often, so I kept running into the issue of two similar-sounding synths blending into one sound. I'm still a novice with synth sound design, so trying to fix this required a lot of trial and error. Lots of premade sounds with a buttload of tweaking.

8 - Bit Lullaby

I originally made this as a simple vibraphone piece about going to sleep. When I wanted to learn how to make chiptune music, I used this tune as my guinea pig to try and recreate. I also added a middle section and a return to the original theme (ABA form for you theory nerds) to round it off into a complete song. Not bad for my first attempt.

Pam The Ladybug

I made this little tune for my friend's stuffed toy ladybug named Pam! I needed some more chiptune practice and offered to write Pam a theme song. For some reason or another, when I think of a ladybug, I think of a large field of sunflowers, which reminds me of farmers, which reminds me of the countryside, which then reminds me of country music. I know, a weird thought process, but at least the piece is cute!!

No Funks Given

This is a little tune I made for a friend's game jam submission, and he wanted chiptune funk music. His pixel game was about solving puzzles by having your soul leave your body. He's a big funk music fan, so I didn't want to let him down. I challenged myself to make it in as little time as possible, so I cheated and added a bitcrusher distortion to several different instruments haha!! I had made this in 3 hours luckily.

8 - Bit Adventure

Picture this, your character is in a magical forest surrounded by cute but dangerous enemies. Maybe in a Metroidvania-style game? It was super fun writing with the ES2 on Logic Pro! It makes me want to remix my favorite songs to 8-bit!

For Funk's Sake

If my friend had made a Soul-ed Out 2, this track would be on it. I was honestly just so proud of my work on the other, I wanted to see if I could make another funky song. I don't know if it beats the other one, but I think it's pretty close. Would you consider this funk? The bass line is pretty catchy though!

Froggy Jazz

Whew boy. The story for this song is a little wild. Originally, I wanted to make a groovy, disco-like song, but I came up with a cool, jazzy little melody that did not fit my theme. I liked it so much, I just stuck with the melody and figured it was fine if I changed courses. While switching over to swing jazz, I ended up getting stuck in a writer's block. I had a melody, bass, drums, but I was definitely missing something! I fiddled around with sounds for a few hours, ended up goofing off, and then I found that this one instrument at a low octave sounded like frog noises!! It was perfect!

From the title alone, you can probably guess that I had to make something that sounds like or is inspired by the Katamari Damacy soundtrack. Where do I even begin to start with the soundtrack? Most of the songs are fun and upbeat with hummable tunes that beautifully add to the chaos!

Unidentified Flying Bovine

This is the 2nd sci-fi piece I had to make, and...yup, it definitely does not match the previous sci-fi thing I made. I saw a demo of the showcase game, and the game had turned into a 1v1 game where the player flies a UFO and tries to steal a cow. Reminded me of Rocket League in a way. I needed something what I would call "gamer music." I picture the stereotypical gamer who would blast dance and EDM music while streaming. I had to make music like that. I created a tall order for myself.

Chucking Snowballs

This time I was asked to write a looping track for a game about a snowball fight. Basically upbeat Christmas vibes✨ I had been listening to Wintery Nintendo Music playlists on YouTube when my friend asked me, so I was heavily influenced by Nintendo music haha. If you ask any musician how to distinguish winter music from regular music, they will say two words: sleigh bells. You bet I added sleigh bells!

Chugging Down Caffeine

As a fun little challenge, my friends and I had to make character themes for Animal Crossing characters. We each picked weird animals, and I was "assigned" Jitters. Have you ever seen that bird character? I know he's a sports fan so he probably drinks soda and energy drinks, but like... He looks like he's had more than a few energy drinks. Chugging all that caffeine is probably the reason how he got his name.

Heist Vibes

This song actually came to be on accident. A mistake really. But it was a clever one! I had to make a song that could fit in the game Teardown, but I've never heard of the game before, much less played it. My boyfriend said that you complete heists in the game. When I searched for the OST on YouTube, I also saw that there were non-heist music, implying that, indeed, there were heists. When I listened to the track titled "About," I was instantly reminded of those old, film noir, detective movies. The track, "Chase," added to this whole idea of a heist.

Another Day for Adventures

This is another song where I had to make something that sounds like it would belong in or is inspired by a game. This time, it was Slime Rancher. I love cute games, but being a Nintendo console gamer and not a PC gamer, I have never played it before. The game was available for the Nintendo Switch, but I didn't have the time to spend on it as a student. Listening to the OST and watching some playthroughs was as good as I can get.

Eating Everything

This week's game was Donut County. If you've never played this game before, you should pause reading this, and go spend like 5 hours swallowing everything with a giant hole controlled by a raccoon on his phone. Silly little low-poly game, but I love it. The music is even better! Daniel Koestner is an amazing writer, and I take huge inspiration from his music. (Fun fact: did you know Koestner got his PhD in oceanography and is currently working on ocean optics? Super smart fellow)

Town Theme

This was the very first video game track I ever made. It wasn't really used in a game, but the intent was there. Because I'm a music theorist, it wasn't challenging to try to make the music loop. As long as the loop ends on a dominant harmony or at least a chord that can easily be followed by the next one, a loop can be made. My goal was to make a town theme. When I think of a town, I think of a sleepy little rural town in the peaceful country side (To be honest, I'm not sure what the differences are between a city, town, and village, but I didn't sweat those details). Sleepy/relaxing farming games like Harvest Moon and Rune Factory Frontier and some locations in the Professor Layton series fit that description perfectly!

Obsidian Sanctuary

This was by far the most difficult track I have ever made. And yet, it was the best track I made so far at that time. This song was made for a showcase game a friend was going to present. When I asked him what the theme of the game was, here is what he said: "The game itself is an arcade-like cartoon-style turret game where you fend off alien invaders. For the mood I was wanting to go for a "heroic last stand" sorta vibe." He also included a screenshot and gameplay footage of what he got. This all seemed fine until he said he wanted it to sound similar to Destroy All Humans.

Protector of Sleep

This was inspired by Hollow Knight. I regret that I have never played this game, but I ABSOLUTELY love the music. When analyzing the soundtrack, I noticed certain motives would be used repeatedly throughout to create the story and make everything coherent. 8-Bit Music Theory made a video about it as well! In his video, he discussed the use of the Pale King's motive, so I wanted to make my own little motive and try to expand it.

I cried writing this song. Seriously. I was in the library with a friend to work on stuff, and I wrote this with tears in my eyes. In fact, when I showed other people this little song, they also started crying. Ok, but I also used really big crying scene in Inside Out as the background to this song. Of course people cried.

This was made for a winter game jam I participated in. The theme was "Stay Warm," but I knew I couldn't really code a whole entire game as a music major with very little coding skills. Instead, I wanted to make a concept game/album. The idea is that you are cozy at home but you run out of firewood. Aside from the music, I also did the *terrible* voices and the isometric art.

Halloweenie

Ah. Halloweenie. My dumb song that many people surprisingly like. The very first game jam I participated in was a bit of a mess. I got randomly paired up with people I didn't know, and we all had to make a game in a week. The theme was that it just had to be Halloween themed, so we could do anything. I was in charge of music while the other three members were in charge of the other aspects. If I learned anything during my experience, it was that the music is probably one of the last things to make/add in the game dev pipeline.

Mission 01

This ambient track was made to fit in Teardown. I had previously made a mistake (see Heist Vibes) and realized I had to make something more ambient. But still heist vibes. How did I do it? Slow and long drones, driving percussion, and whooshy wind sounds for the atmosphere! Mission 01 complete!

Deep Mars

Ambient music is surprisingly simple to write. At least the basic idea of it (I don't want to offend too many people!). Most ambient music features drones. And also sweeping sound effects. When I was tasked to analyze the soundtrack of Factorio, I noticed it was full of ambience with also some nice melodic fragments here and there. If you don't know anything about the game (I sure didn't), you basically build factories on a planet so you can go back home. I know there's more to it, but I know the extremely positive reviews on Steam can explain the game better than me haha!

Desolation

I don't enjoy creepy things. In fact, I'm the type of person who would cry at horror movies. My dislike for creepy things is a surprisingly positive thing for me as a composer. I know it sounds lazy, but if I don't like what I write because I'm uncomfy with it in a creepy way, I know it works. This is what happened when I had to analyze the music of Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead and try to make something that would fit in the game.

Malfunction

I truly don't remember making this. I just had to look at my files to make sure that I did make this. It seems like it's just had a drone and noise. The patterns look almost random. I made this for the joke dating simulation game I made with my boyfriend, and this was playing during a creepy scene where a dark figure is haunting your dreams. The static noise was supposed to be the figure communicating with you. It's strange. The "music". Oh and the game too haha.
